He performed as a musician with the Ethiopian circus group from 1995-1998. Since settling in Melbourne, Abiy has performed with many different bands playing saxophone and Ethiopian traditional instruments. Abiy is also a member of Melbourne-based The JAzmaris. “The JAzmaris infuse a mix of original compositions with those of the great Ethiopian composers who have come before them”.
